Venue: Palazzo Versace, Dubai
The featherweight title bout featured one of India’s finest MMA fighters, Sanjeet Budhwar. He faced off against a top prospect from Kyrgyzstan, Atabek Abdimitalipov.
Sanjeet has been on a tear in the promotion with most of his wins coming by knockout. Atabek is coming off a strong run himself winning 4 of his last 5 fights.
The fight was a clash of styles. Sanjeet is a knockout artist and Atabek a grimy wrestler. It was very calculated affair with both fighters showing plenty of respect to each other’s skills. For the whole five rounds that it went, it was mostly a striking contest. Sanjeet showed his experience and his awkward head an body movements were difficult for Atabek to read. In the exchanges that followed, both fighters landed shots but Sanjeet was winning in the stand up game. Atabek tried to mix his game but most of his takedowns were stuffed by Sanjeet. In the third round, Atabek finally managed a takedown and secured the back. But, there wasn’t much activity from his end as Sanjeet managed to defend it well.
Their every move was measured. Though both of them tried a risky move here and there, it was more of a battle of patience. However, Sanjeet was more active throughout the whole fight with his shots and kicks and movement. That was enough to make the judges award him as winner of the fight by unanimous decision.
With this victory, Sanjeet Budhwar becomes the inaugural MFN men’s featherweight champion.
